As we move into late summer and fall cleanup season, please use extra caution with any outdoor burning, including weed burning, field burning, ditch burning, and burning yard debris. Dry grass, crops, leaves, and brush can catch fire quickly, and even a light breeze can cause a fire to spread faster than expected. If you are enjoying a backyard bonfire, be sure it is located a safe distance from homes, vinyl fencing, vinyl siding, and other combustible materials, as heat from the fire can melt, damage, or ignite nearby structures. Before you burn, check for any local fire restrictions, keep an eye on weather conditions, and make sure you have water, shovels, or other firefighting tools nearby.
Never leave a fire unattended, and stay with it until it is completely out. When you’re finished burning, thoroughly soak the area, stir the ashes, and check for any remaining hot spots. Taking a few extra precautions can help prevent unwanted fires, protect homes, fields, livestock, and property, and keep our community safe throughout the late summer and fall season.
